The Cultural Genesis of Peranakan Heritage
Over six centuries ago, during the first of his seven epic voyages known as Zheng He’s Western Ocean Expeditions (郑和下西洋) from 1405 to 1407 A.D., the legendary Admiral Zheng He (郑和) brought the grandeur of the Ming Dynasty to the thriving port of Malacca. This momentous encounter initiated an extraordinary cultural exchange, where Chinese physicians — versed in the 12 meridians (经脉) and 309 acupuncture points (穴位) — intertwined their knowledge with Traditional Malay Therapeutic Massage, Urutan Melayu (马来推拿). From this union, the unique tradition of Urutan Peranakan was born, embodying a legacy of harmony and healing that continues to thrive today.
Amidst this era of exchange, it is said that Princess Hang Li Po (汉丽宝公主), a noble daughter of the Ming Emperor, was sent to marry Sultan Mansur Shah of Malacca. This union, though more myth than fact, symbolises the deep historical ties between China and Malaysia. The tale of Princess Hang Li Po and Sultan Mansur Shah has been passed down through generations, representing the spirit of unity and the rich cultural fusion that defines the Peranakan heritage.
